April 8, 2008: From April 26 to Jun 6, 2008 Artemis Healing Center exhibits charcoal drawings by Darla McKenna. Please come join us for the opening
celebration Saturday Apr 26 from 6-8 pm.
My drawings are a response to the natural world. Mountains, trees, a flowing river and clouds are my inspiration. I extract the formal commonalities of nature and distill them into my own macrocosm.
I choose charcoal because it provides a stark boldness, amplifying nature's mysteries. Charcoal produces rich, velvet values and crisp lines that I find pleasing. I rub powder charcoal onto the paper to achieve multiple tones. At times, tone is erased, lightened then reworked.
I work without visual reference; only memories of certain
elements. Line is the backbone of the work. Color is limited or
not included to focus on the beauty of the tone and line. I enjoy
applying sensitive lines and feeling the receptiveness of the
paper. Layers of lines build upon one another, a rhythm emerges
and forms develop. The line accelerates and takes me where it
wants to go. The experience is one of awareness, fluidity and
expectancy.
Darla McKenna was born in San Diego, California. Following in her mother's footsteps she has been creating art in multiple medias most her life. She received a BA in Studio art with an emphasis in painting from San Diego State University and also has a degree in Art Education from San Jose State University. April 8, 2008: In March, Bryn received certification as a charter member of the Stone Walkers Association (SWA). This invitation-only membership recognizes the world's most skillful geothermal therapists who have completed in-depth training by board certified institutions. Bryn received her certification in LaStone Therapy™ in 2001 by Mary Nelson, founder of LaStone and vanguard of the current trend in hot stone massage.
Geothermal therapy is rooted within ancient indigenous cultures from across the globe and has only recently surfaced in the massage industry. At first considered a passing fad, it has proven effective in pain and stress relief, becoming the 'Most Popular Spa Treatment of 2007' according to trade magazines. This massage technique involves the use of both heated and cooled stones ("geo" for stones and 'thermal' for temperature) to promote a healthy balance to all systems of the body. Geo-thermal therapists can tailor a treatment session to specifically address clients' needs. For example,

January 30, 2008: Birth: its a miracle. A rite of passage. A natural part of life.
But more than anything, birth is a business. Compelled to find answers after a disappointing birth experience with her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to examine and question the way American women have babies.
The film interlaces intimate birth stories with surprising historical, political and scientific insights and shocking statistics about the current maternity care system. When director Epstein discovers she is pregnant during the making of the film, the journey becomes even more personal.
Should most births be viewed as a natural life process, or should every delivery be treated as a potentially catastrophic medical emergency?
The California Association of Midwifes has organized various community screenings of The Business of Being Born. The first screenings are at The Ugly Mug in Soquel on Feb 2nd and 7th at 7PM. Tickets are $5 - $18 (Pay what you can) and available in advance through Brown Paper Tickets.

January 18, 2008: Artemis Healing Center is hosting an exhibit by
Ginger Crawford Tolonen from January 25
to April 25; please come join us for the opening
celebration Friday Jan 25 from 6-9 pm.
This season, we will be co-hosting and co-sponsoring our art opening with Bare Yoga, a fantastic, like-minded community center that also supports local women artists! Bare Yoga is hosting an exhibit of Susie Lundy's paintings.
A two block stroll, and you can feast your eyes on art from both centers, your palate on healthy snacks, and your spirit on a healthy, loving ambiance! We hope to see you at the event, but if not you can always view the work at either place for the next 3 months.
Ginger Tolonen grew up in the Santa Clara Valley in the 1950's.
The daughter of a second-generation Californian, her ancestors
arrived in America on the Mayflower, and met her other ancestors
standing on the shores.
Her mother met her father in the shipyards of San Francisco during the 1930's, and they later married and raised four daughters. Tolonen is one-half Cherokee-Choctaw, from her fathers' side of the family.
I believe my ancestry is partially responsible for my connection with the multi-cultural symbols I often use in my work.
Tolonen has been a devoted artist for many years, using charcoal, oils, acrylics, pastels, and now, her chosen field of painting and printmaking. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts - Pictorial, from San Jose State in 2001, where she focused primarily on printmaking and painting. She received her Masters of Fine Arts in Printmaking from California College of The Arts in 2003. This in depth education shows in the quality and technical detail of her work.

Touch seems to be as essential as sunlight. -Diane Ackerman
As I was growing up, a favorite family story was about the time I embarrassed my mother and grandmother when I wandered off in a department store. I ended up in the main store window petting a feather boa saying, "Nice kitty, nice kitty". I had a pretty good imagination. The embarrassment was caused when my whereabouts were announced over the PA system requesting that someone come and collect me.
While I've stopped stroking feather boa's in store windows, I must admit to a continued fascination with touching things. Sometimes it's the alluring outfit in the department store at other times it's the bright green new growth on a bush.
I returned to the US after living with my family in England for eight years with vague plans of getting an art or education degree in college, but I didn't find my niche and soon abandoned those ideas. Instead, I obtained an art history degree and subsequently worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Life took a few turns, I kept dabbling in the arts in my free time and went off to graduate school in a new area of interest.
Around the same time, it finally dawned on me that I needed to satisfy this urge to touch things. I need to learn to weave. This wasn't as easy as it sounds. There were about three years of failed attempts to enroll in classes, but it finally happened. I learned the basics of weaving about eight years ago and it's been a really interesting journey.
My current areas of interest include: experimenting with color by dyeing my own yarn, woven and wrapped shibori dyeing, which is a resist dyeing technique, inlay weaving, which allows you to create almost a painting with woven yarn, and spinning my own yarn. Every project is a new learning experience and the results are often surprising.
Jennifer's textile art will be on display at Artemis Healing Center until Jan 25, 2008.

October 18, 2007: We are pleased to announce that
beautiful and dynamic Journey Revington is joining our team!
Journey holds a degree in Women's Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her focus here remained Women's Health, and specifically during the Childbearing years. Upon graduating from UCSC, she wanted to explore the Midwife's path and so began training as a Birth and Post-partum Doula at Twin Lakes Healing Arts College in Santa Cruz; this 120 hour training provided her with a thorough introduction to the Birth Realm.
Journey's first three births lead her to the conviction that Training in Pre-natal yoga should be the next step. She became certified in Whole Birth Yoga in March of 2004. Journey's passion is working with women to facilitate their growth towards Self Empowerment and Self-love through knowing and trusting in their own bodies. She chose the childbearing years because this is when women are simultaneously at their most powerful and vulnerable.
Through her personal practice, Journey learned of the deep inner wisdom and strength that can be easily accessed through Yoga and mindfulness. Continuing the ancient tradition of women coming together in a healing, supportive circle provides each of us with a safe space to nurture our body's wisdom and intuition.

October 4, 2007: Bryn Truett-Chavez is now a qualified practitioner of the Arvigo
Techniques™ of Maya
Abdominal Massage (ATMAM). ATMAM is a non-invasive, external,
massage technique. It guides internal abdominal organs into their
proper position for optimum health and well being. Maya massage
improves organ function by releasing physical and emotional
congestion from the abdomen.
This massage is effective for both men and women. The technique applies anatomy, physiology, herbology and naprapathy, (study of the ligaments, joints and muscles), with ancient Maya healing techniques to address common female and male complaints. The technique works by relieving congestion and blockages to improve the flow of chi and fluids of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems to prevent the progression of chronic disease symptomology.
Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN, developed these techniques, after apprenticing with Don Elijio Panti, the last traditional Maya Shaman in Central America, where she has lived for over 30 years. ATMAM™ combines modern science with traditional healing and wisdom to produce a holistic path to physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
